Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a coordinated attack targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in mountainous terrain just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a several entry passages down to the site... early reports indicate the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among numerous British personnel stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our safety, shows how our armed forces are prepared to act, all year round, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
