Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending legal challenges.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after fresh information were revealed.
This encompassed trying to remove his tracking device and a call for a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Court Filing Details Escape Risks
In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to ensure success in his escape.
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on Friday: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so followers could seek divine intervention for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Embassy Asylum Concerns
Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of the former president's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to seek refuge through a consular facility", a announcement said.
The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, Brazil's capital, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on imports of Brazilian goods.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in the capital and will have a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for medical care, saying he needed frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the presidential race to his left-wing rival, Lula.
High Court judges said that he knew of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to imprison and murder Alexandre de Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded and destroyed government buildings in the capital, the capital city.
The police took action and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose scheme, they said, was for the Brazilian military to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from campaigning for office until the year 2060 - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The former president called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 national vote.
